Gardening and social networks

I have not been blogging since twenty days.I feel a pang of regret,, but what to do? Life has been hectic. I am active on social network, yes Facebook. The notorious one, which takes all the time. One wants to read posts, comment on them, like the posts, comment again and so on. Since  the topic is of interest ,  ‘Gardening”, I am hooked. Addicted!

Wondering how come , now? at this age?

I stumbled up on  “Organic Terrace Gardening” ,a Bangalore based group, and found the energy and enthusiasm amazing.  I could not help joining the group to  dig into their experiences and expertise.

When I met the Organic Terrace gardening enthusiasts in Bangalore, it was a revelation. Their energy and their dedication, mingled with their generosity in sharing information simply bowled me over. I was also allowed to join in, though I was not from Bangalore and was given a warm welcome.

One of the group members Pradeep Dsouza was also kind enough to invite me to his house for the gardeners’ meet, which was decided, in a flash and worked upon. Once again I have to admire the positive vibes they all share.

This was the beginning of my Facebook interaction. That has led to frequent interactions , in what everyone is posting, along with my own humble contributions, a heady time I had.  The obvious result is the neglect of other blogging activities.

(Say no to Facebook for a few hours and write the blog, I decided.)

Here is the gist of what I did  since three weeks after my visit to Lalbagh Bangalore.

If anyone has said “coco peat” two years back, I would have thought of Amazon forests. Till I stumbled inot GG’s blog, I had no idea this medium is useful for terrace gardening. When I had started off in full gear, to plant my terrace with greenery, my husband was weary. The roof was not too strong, one had to be careful about using mud and pots. So coco peat was handy to fill up the containers.

Now,  I have gained more knowledge on cocopeat. It needs to be this quality, needs to have certification for restricted use in  organic  agriculture , and it might harm the plants if not washed properly. ( Ignorance is bliss I used to simply add them to the pots, now I think ten times, before buying). I also came to know that  Washing the cocopeat doesn’t solve the entire problem.

“Cocopeat has a negatively charged complex, surrounded by a couple of positively charged ions: sodium and potassium. Because these elements stick to the complex, like iron to a magnet, there is no danger to the plant root initially. The problem starts when fertilizing with calcium. The calcium will push the potassium and sodium aside and take their position. Consequently, the calcium that is connected to the complex won’t be available to the plant, while sodium and potassium that are released into the water will be available.”http://www.dutchplantin.com/en/frequently-asked-questions/difference-between-buffered-and-non-buffered-coco/

Quiet bothersome. But once you know the  adverse effect,  due care needs to be taken.

Many of the processes followed for the past year, looks inadequate after  the interaction with experienced garden lovers.  The new ideas  leave me a little confused, I need to take up new ways of potting mixes, pesticide concoctions, new combinations. All exciting and time-consuming. But very satisfying , which leads to remarks like ” hey I did it” in Facebook comments.:-)

Back to gardening with full swing. The pots are all exhausted , the number of seeds, and bulbs I brought back( actually not much), needed urgent planting. The soil, cocopeat, farmyard manure, vermi ,needs to be bought again , with , frequent trips to markets, to feed the plants . With pouring rains, the plants get leached , and need nutrition . The flowering of some plants need more care. My time is all for them in the mornings. I get exhausted and make the family  too  edgy.

With such care, or lack of it, the plants are responding nicely. look at them.

Pattu, next time you visit Bangalore, please let me know!

This is such a lovely post. I am almost tempted to start a little garden in my verandah. After I find a way to keep the pigeons away. The photos are great – reminds me of our own garden years ago. Thank you!

Hi Bikram. Thanks for the appreciation. In UK , you get such a lot of stuff to aid your garden interests, I get mad, looking at the supplies. 🙂 But the weather is not the same all along!

We have fine weather and hot weather so plants thrive despite our lack of knowledge.

Pattu, thanks for sharing your Terrace Gardening experience. You sound happy and anxious about it simultaneously. The pics. show that your hard work is paid off. Really nice 🙂 Keep it up. I like the sound knowledge of plants chemistry you added in your post.

It is good to have a hobby like gardening that keeps you away from time consuming social network! That is my personal opinion 🙂 I tend to read when I want to stay from social network.

    • gardenerat60 says:

Thanks Rathi for taking time off. Yeah it does, I like Facebook gardening friends too, They contribute so much! And love the garden too, it is like caring for kids.:-)

  12. Amit Agarwal says:

A wonderfully lovable post! The gardener in me is delighted 🙂 I used to grow veggies and flowers when I had a patch of land. Then it was reduced to a few dozens of potters with leafy evergreens for many years which I really miss. But since past couple of years even those had to be parted with when we moved in to this multi storeyed apartments building.. 😦
I roam about in parks and jungles now, due to my love for plants and trees.
(…and read your posts too 🙂 ) Thanks a lot!!

    • gardenerat60 says:

How sweet Amit Bhayya!. I am glad you still have the affection for the greenery and go looking for it.Life is full of compensations. I cant go out much, so I compensate, by growing them.

Please post pictures of pretty plants and things you come across, with suitable verses.

  13. Jeevan says:

Seems you are so busy learning and trying new things in gardening… it’s a quite wonderful hobby! I too have some pots with rose and jasmine flowers and I really want to upgrade more but the flowers doesn’t bloom like we expect and the rose plants only last for few months. I used to ask mom for getting some vegetable plants but couldn’t get still and there isn’t much space in our apartment to create a garden.

Seems the Bangalore trip has encouraged you a lot and connecting with face book is cool! Enjoy the new social network and gardening.

  14. arati says:

lovely, here’s to many more happy hours gardening and blogging 🙂

  15. I was surprised to read about the cocopeat. Very interesting.

  16. The Fool says:

You have spend time usefully only if you are learning more about gardening on facebook. Only doing useless chit chat and on FB is a waste of time. Gardening is indeed a fascinating hobby. Now I don’t have time for gardening – used to do a lot as a child with my parents.

    • gardenerat60 says:

Welcome here Karthik325. True FB is good for constructive work, but it does take lot of time and interest.:-)
Glad you were into gardening in younger days , good intro by parents. It will all come back in its own time.

  17. Zephyr says:

Loved the line, ‘Say no to Facebook for a few hours and write the blog,’ LOL So you decided to stop using FB for a few hours? IT is addicting — FB as well as gardening. I am glad you have struck a balance between the two, nurturing each other in the process. What wonderful garden, Pattu! Look at the colours! This is one hobby that includes all the pancha bhootams. Figure it out for yourself :))

    • gardenerat60 says:

Love you dear Zephyr. You had me there . I am prone to addictions, be it food, reading, talking.. Now it is FB and Garden. Sometimes, I wonder , where I would be if I liked alcohol:-)
Right now it is all oranges and blues, thanks to Marigolds. Failed on the Sunflower front though 😦

I am going to call you soon to find about the Boothams.:-)

  18. One such facebook group made me start my terrace garden. And then every time I come to your space, I get inspired. Do write the correct use of cocopit and which plants need it 🙂

    • gardenerat60 says:

      Hi Ghazala, thanks.
Come over to Facebook group called Organic Terrace gardening. And have a look. It has all the answers you are looking for, and new questions are always answered.

  19. Sia says:

I have never managed to get my cauliflower to germinate, let alone give me a harvest, hence am taking the easy way and opting for tomatoes, okra and brinjal this year.

  23. I too have been planning to plant a few vegetables in my house. But right now I can’t. I will try to do it after some time. Your blog is definitely one of the inspirations 🙂

We enjoy gardening too. We make our own compost and after the first year when we produced a squelchy mess, it has gradually improved. Our garbage has reduced to less than half. Our kid talking to her brother on fb: “S (a cousin) and I have vowed that we will not grow up and let gardening take over our lives like our parents have. Are you with us?”

  26. dilip says:

Awesome post, gardening, flowers and interesting narration. Regards.
