Welcome flowers on my Terrace

My last post about the terrace garden was in early September 2012. Much rain water has drained from the terrace since then. Meanwhile I could only share a post on Rice husks and the wild goose chase we went around. I am looking for excuses and Once again I would like to shift the blame on to Facebook. Today I firmly decided to take a break from Facebook and write the long over due post.

I started skimming though my photograph collected over two months, to share them here and write a quick post. The collection is pretty huge, therefore , I have divide them into categories of flowers , vegetables and the rest. I would not like to tax you readers, with long posts inter-spread with pictures dear to me, but clearly not to everyone .

Flowers were never my strong point, and I brush aside occasional tugs at my heart with, “oh too delicate to grow”. Except marigold which I like very much and also for companion planting, a few roses and two hibiscus was all I had. Chrysanthemums are welcome, but not grown with such devotion that I will measure its size or keep counting the number of buds, or boast about the colors. They were around like all other plants and grow as they like. I am glad flowers appear, and also glad that they are hardy.

Occasionally I also get to see Kanakambaram/aboli,flowering suddenly with such grace and color, pretty pinkish beige or whatever color it is called. ( we term it as Kanakambaram color). This is another no-fuss plant for impatient people like me.

During my visit to DOH,Hulimavu visit, when the lady asked whether I would like some flower seeds, and offered a big handful, costing next to nothing, I readily agreed. I forgot to label the name too, and left in the packet for months. While planting veggies for the season, I scattered some of these seeds too, without any thought. Little did I know I would like those colors very much and photograph them for consecutive days with such admiration. So Cosmos it is, delicately swaying in the breeze.

The early morning light, the only time I visit the terrace, catches them so prettily. I am not the only one, there are such cute visitors to share their offerings and gladden my mornings.

The butterfly was so good at posing , after a few more days I had a chance to click again on another bunch.I keep meeting them everyday.

One day, while I was inspecting the coriander seeds scattered on to a wire basket. I found a big leaf was emerging as an oddity. I was curious and let it grow.Once I almost plucked the plant out, but the shape of the leaves and appearance of buds stopped me. And it was worth the wait , when I saw the flower.

Mexican Torch flower it seems. Many of the gardening friends have asked for the seeds.

Another casual beauty is the ever obliging Balsam seeds my son sent. The colors are cheerful and it is no fuss , sturdy plant.

I am not sure how I these seeds arrived, may be in compost, but they are entwining many plants right now and need to be uprooted soon.

The rains are on the wane now, the ground has hardened, but the flowers are holding on. I know before long the chrysanthemums will open up to cheer me up.More photographs to share..Life is good.

That’s beautiful to see flowers bloomed in your garden! The butterfly leaves me at awe… We had balsam for sometime but it only grows big and never bloomed.

Enjoy the Facebook and don’t forget this space too 🙂

Always refreshing to see the flowers bloom and worth the while too, as they attract such lovely butterflies to us 🙂

  6. Nice to see flowers this time on your garden. Most of the flowers don’t need much care. Just a few old pots, vessels, baskets etc can be used. You can also hang them from a rod to create your own hanging garden. 🙂

    Look forward to more.

  11. Jeanne says:

Pattu, the last two flowers are of the passion fruit vine!. I hope they’re not the ones you’re going to uproot. The flowers look perfect the way they’re growing, all mingled with everything else.

    • gardenerat60 says:

True Jeanne. The fruit is full of seeds and is small and red in color. My friends from Hyderabad have opined that this is not the passion fruit kind, but a different strain. the flower is pretty, but not as much as the violet , bigger ones. The vines are growing wild and encircle many of the vegetable plants. I keep cutting them , and they sprout elsewhere.I think they are coming in the compost I am using. I am seeing to that I do not eliminate them, but use selection.:-). I will add the picture of fruiting vine too ,to the post.

      Thanks.

  12. The orange flower you discovered growing amongst your coriander was amazing! As I say a present from the birds! Some Marigolds as I understand can also be used in salads so they ahve a dual use!

Loved the butterflies the best. So long since I have seen any. Of course there were plenty in the parks of London! Beautiful flowers. Your terrace looks like a veritable jungle. How do you make it so verdant?

    • gardenerat60 says:

Thanks Zepyr. I am so happy you liked my forest. Someone else also told me today, when they visited in the evening.. A forest.Like that aha!

The rain Gods have been kind. Once the moisture stops, it will slow down. Then summer all will be dry.. So I am enjoying for few months.

  28. What gorgeous blooms!! I particularly loved the kanakambaram and the Mexican torch flower. Beautiful!!
I recently found a packet of petunia seeds. Is it too late to sow them now?

    • gardenerat60 says:

Welcome Scribblehappy here. Thanks for the lovely comment.
I am not a big flower person, I am more into vegetables. The kanakambaram and the Mexican Torch sprouted by itself and add color to my garden. I am not sure about petunia.:-(. I usually look for tips from the Internet.

  29. narasimhan36 says:

  30. You have got a beautiful garden, Pattu Raj! I love butterflies and have clicked some and did a post. I have a small space for garden and I get some beautiful butterflies. But your garden has got lovely flowers.

    Nice knowing you, Pattu Raj!

  31. This is too much. If I get a chance to come to Hyderabad, your terrace garden would be one of the ‘must visit places’ on my itinerary.

    • gardenerat60 says:

Thanks a lot Talkalittledo , for the kind words. You are surely welcome. My only regret now is, my garden is lying bare since six months, my blog has not been written since 6 months, and I am just starting the vegetable pots once again from today, ( after the rains cooled our hot city).
